This photo at a Grand Army of the Republic reunion shows Gustavus Klipsch (front row, second from left) wearing his shell jacket; Klipsch was commissary sergeant of Company L, 2nd Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry. The 2nd Missouri State Militia Cavalry was a federally-funded state militia regiment whose primary purpose was to conduct offensive operations against Confederate guerillas and oppose raids by regular Confederate forces.
They were organized in 1861 and mustered out of service on April 20, 1865.
