Stephen Jennings enlisted and mustered into the 5th Kansas Cavalry on July 16, 1861, as regimental sergeant major; he was promoted to second lieutenant on January 1, 1862, and on September 15, 1862 to first lieutenant.
On April 25, 1864, Lieutenant Jennings with a small portion of the 5th Kansas Cavalry was providing escort duty for a supply wagon train attempting to resupply General Steele’s army in Camden. The wagon train was attacked at Marks’ Mill and many men were killed and wounded; Lieutenant Jennings and nearly all his men were taken prisoner and held at Tyler, Texas, until exchanged.
Jennings mustered out of the service on April 6, 1865.
