John Jones enlisted on October 31, 1861, and mustered into Company H, 5th Kansas Cavalry on December 31, 1861, as a private.
On April 25, 1864, Private Jones, along with a small portion of the 5th Kansas Cavalry was providing escort duty for a supply wagon train attempting to resupply General Steele’s army in Camden. The wagon train was attacked at Marks’ Mill and many men were killed and wounded; Private Jones was taken prisoner and held at Tyler, Texas, until exchanged.
Jones was mustered out of the service on December 1, 1864.
