This quilt, made in 1860, was carried by Cornelius Milton Comegys of the 19th Iowa Infantry.
The quilt pattern is Appliquéd Meadow Daisies, a.k.a., Mexican Rose; it consists of 23 inch square blocks with a 6 ½ inch border on four sides. It is hand appliqued with meadow daisies using Turkey Red, Green, and Chrome Orange plain cottons, all on an off-white background. The green fabric is an over dyed fabric that has faded to a chartreuse color. The orange fabric appears to be the chrome orange of the period, sometimes called cheddar. The border is made up of strips approximately 1 ½ inches wide of the same fabrics as the main quilt.
Although many Union soldiers carried the U.S. regulation wool blanket, some also carried quilts sent from home.
