1st Kansas Colored Infantry Cabin Creek Report
This report, written by Colonel James M. Williams to Colonel William A. Phillips, covers the events of the Battle of Cabin Creek on July 1, 1863.
The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry, commanded by Colonel James M. Williams, led a Union supply train from Fort Scott, Kansas to Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. Williams was informed Confederates under command of Colonel Stand Watie were intending to ambush the train. Watie was waiting for reinforcements led by Brigadier General William Cabell to attack; however, due to high water on the Grand River, Cabell was unable to make it to Cabin Creek in time. On July 1, 1863, Williams was able to force the Confederates to retreat by cavalry charges and artillery; the wagon train made it to Fort Gibson and delivered the supplies.
