This Starr .54 caliber carbine of James H. Dunlap, 1st Arkansas Cavalry (US), was manufactured by Starr Arms, Yonkers, New York. Stamped in dots on the butt plate are the initials “JHD.” Stamped on the barrel next to the lock is “I Ark K” and “FDL.”
James Dunlap enlisted on July 14, 1863, at Carroll County, Arkansas; he was mustered into Company K, 1st Arkansas Cavalry on August 31, 1863, at Springfield, Missouri, as a private. The 1st Arkansas Cavalry saw action at the battles of Prairie Grove and Fayetteville.
Dunlap was mustered out of service on August 23, 1865.
