This counterpane was owned by Mrs. John Ray, and was reportedly used to wrap the body of General Nathaniel Lyon for transport to Springfield, Missouri following his death at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, August 10, 1861. Made from white cotton, it shows slight discoloration spots.
Doctor Samuel H. Melcher, assistant surgeon, 5th Missouri Infantry (U.S.), recalled “After arranging the body as well as circumstances permitted, it was carried to the wagon and covered with a spread or sheet furnished me by Mrs. Ray.”
