In 1861 the pro-Union citizens of St. Louis had this presentation sword made as a gift for Captain Nathaniel Lyon. Lyon lost his life at Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861, however, before this ceremonial sign of rank could be presented.
The engraving on one side of the scabbard throat reads, “Presented to Capt. Nathaniel, 2nd U.S. Inf. by the citizens of St. Louis as testimonial of their esteem.”
