This Medal of Honor was awarded to Henry Clay Wood; inscribed on reverse is “The Congress to 1st Lt. Clay H. Wood 11th US Inf for gallantry Wilson’s Creek, MO Aug 10th 1861.” The metal is in a purple lined case.
The medal was awarded to Lieutenant Wood who, after being wounded, held his company of recruits together in an orderly retreat from the Ray Cornfield while under heavy Confederate musket fire.
