This drawing was made on blue lined paper by Private Andrew Tinkham, Company F, First Kansas Infantry, of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, August 10, 1861. The drawing is in pencil with black ink overlay; cannon fire is shown in red. Wilson’s Creek runs from left to right along the bottom; a rubbing of the back of a penny appears in the upper left corner.
“Dear Brother David enclosed I sent you a picture of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek” is written on the back.
Tinkham enlisted on May 25, 1861, in the First Kansas Infantry; he was wounded at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek and received a disability discharge on October 18, 1861, at St. Louis.
Records indicate Tinkham enrolled and mustered into the 3rd Kansas Artillery on October 14, 1861, but when the battery failed to reach full strength he was transferred to the 1st Independent Kansas Artillery on April 24, 1862.
