This officer’s high crowned blue cloth forage cap with quatrefoil design, a leather bill and strap with one brass “eagle” button on each side belonged to Harrison DuBois, 62nd U.S. Colored Infantry.
Harrison DuBois enlisted in Company I, 11th Kansas Cavalry at Burlingame, Kansas; he was commissioned a captain in the U. S. 62nd Colored Infantry and was later given a brevet promotion to major for meritorious service.
The 62nd U. S. Colored Infantry was organized on March 11, 1864, from the 1st Missouri Colored Infantry; they were assigned primarily to garrison duties in Louisiana and Texas until they were mustered out of service on March 31, 1866.
On February 19, 1903, while walking home, DuBois was struck by a train. He died of his injuries the following day.
