This Confederate lined shell jacket has seven wood buttons, is butternut in color, and has an outside pocket on the left side and an inside pocket on the right side.
The jacket belonged to George Jacob Mook, Company D, 4th Missouri Cavalry CSA. Mook, a resident of St. Louis County, joined the regiment in June 1863 at Bird’s Point, Arkansas.
Mook rode with Sterling Price during the 1864 Missouri raid. He was captured at Mound City, Kansas, on October 24, 1864, sent to the Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis, then transferred to Alton, Illinois. Mook was eventually sent to Point Lookout, Maryland in February 1865 and exchanged. He arrived in Richmond, VA on March 1, 1865, and rejoined his command in time for them to surrender to Federal forces at New Orleans that May. Later that month he was paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana.
