USS St. Louis Sailors
Two unknown sailors from the USS St. Louis, a City Class ironclad river gunboat, appear in this photograph. The sailor on the right is holding a cavalry saber; the one on the left has “St. Louis” on the band or “tally” of his hat.
The St. Louis served as the Union flagship in the battle and capture of Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River in February 1862. St. Louis was renamed the Baron DeKalb on September 8, 1862, and was sunk by a Confederate mine on the Yazoo River on July 13, 1863.
